Who are we?
Rayonier began operating in New Zealand in 1988 and significantly expanded its presence in 1992 with the purchase of 108,000 hectares of forests from the government. In 2005, Rayonier became a partner in, and the manager of Matariki Forests, a 132,000 hectare forest estate that is New Zealand’s third largest.
Rayonier is a significant shareholder and the manager of Matariki Forests along with Phaunos Timber Fund.
In New Zealand, Rayonier employs more than 90 forestry and business professionals as well as 700 contractors throughout the country. Rayonier harvests over 2 million cubic metres of timber per year of which a large proportion is sold locally within New Zealand. The remainder is exported into Asia with China, Korea and India being important markets. Each year 4,500 hectares of land is replanted, 200km of forest roads are upgraded or constructed and 15,000 hectares of forest is silviculturally treated.
Rayonier | Matariki Forests has conducted its business with a strong commitment to Health and Safety and the environment. Our responsible forestry practices confirm this commitment.
Matariki Forests has Forest Stewardship Certification® (FSC®) across all of our regional operations. FSC® guides our activities in all forest operations in New Zealand. These principles are the foundation of our efforts to protect and grow value for our investors. They also help us to meet all regulatory requirements and the environmental expectations of our investors, customers, employees and other stakeholders.
Rayonier | Matariki Forests are committed to health and safety excellence. Because we care about people, we continually strive for safe and productive operations. We place a strong emphasis on working in partnership with employees, contractors, regulators, training organisations and various industry associations to achieve high standards of safety and low injury rates.
A demonstration of this commitment can be seen in recent Matariki safety initiatives, including developing and strengthening workplace safety culture, setting and achieving minimum standards of training, insisting on Drug & Alcohol testing of all people in safety sensitive positions and a series of New Year Safe Start breakfasts to raise awareness of start-up risks. Matariki is also a principal supporter of Top Spot, a programme that recognises high achievers within our contracted work force and is actively supporting the initiatives of the Forest Industry Safety Council launched in 2015. We are also members of the Business Leaders Forum for Work Place Health and Safety and we have maintained tertiary accreditation through the ACC Workplace Safety Management Programme since 2005.
As a landowner and tenant, Rayonier | Matariki Forests recognise that some lands have ‘special’ values. With this in mind, Rayonier | Matariki Forests continue to survey and identify areas of cultural, historic or environmental significance.
Rayonier | Matariki Forests work with local councils, Historic Places Trust, Iwi, Department of Conservation, local hunting, fishing and sports clubs to proactively manage all requirements.
